As Senate Assistant Majority Leader, Chairman of the Law, Public Safety and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Vice-chair of the Judiciary Committee, and member of the Wagering, Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee, Senator Girgenti has earned his reputation as a fighter for his constituents. He’s a full-time legislator, working for us:

Stabilizing Property Taxes

Senator Girgenti works tirelessly finding ways to reduce property taxes. He’s voted/supported legislation to:

  • Stabilize property taxes and increase rebates for homeowners including seniors and renters.
  • Support increases to local school districts which will contribute to local property tax stabilization
  • Tighten state laws regarding campaign contributions, lobbyist disclosure, legislative ethics and public corruption
  • Implement a process that rebalances overall allocation of funding for long-term care services by expanding home and community-based services for those eligible.

Fighting Crime

Long known as tough on crime, and an advocate for crime victims, Senator Girgenti was the originator of the “Tax on Crime” law which taxes the criminal to provide crime victims compensation to assist them in recovery of injuries and loss. He has also been a Prime Sponsor of the following bills/laws:

  • A law to enhance law enforcement efforts to mitigate gang-related crime by enforcing remedies related to trademark violations including authority to seize and destroy counterfeit “knock off” clothing featuring gang colors.
  • An enhanced mandatory term of imprisonment for persons who possess, receive or transfer a “community gun”.
  • The law requiring an inquiry concerning the source of bail funds when a defendant is a gang member associate
  • The law which requires elementary school education in gang violence prevention and ways to avoid membership in gangs; education for teachers to recognize signs of gang activity.
  • The bill that would make transfer of a cell phone to a prisoner by Corrections Department personnel a crime to prevent continued control of gang activity while incarcerated

Improving Education and Protecting Kids

As Majority Whip, Senator Girgenti voted/supported legislation to:

  • Support increases to local school districts which will contribute to local property tax stabilization
  • The law which requires elementary school education in gang violence prevention and ways to avoid membership in gangs; education for teachers to recognize signs of gang activity.
  • The law that makes it a crime to solicit or recruit a minor to join or participate in gang activity.
  • Sponsor of the laws titled Megan’s Law, the Amber Alert Notification Act and various measures to increase penalties to stop sexual predators from endangering children.
  • Created the legislation that became law requiring sprinklers in all New Jersey college dormitories following the Seton Hall University fire.
