Legislation
Long known as tough on crime, and an advocate for crime victims, Senator Girgenti was the originator of the “Tax on Crime” law which taxes the criminal to provide crime victims compensation to assist them in recovery of injuries and loss. He has also been a Prime Sponsor of the following bills/laws:
- A law to enhance law enforcement efforts to mitigate gang-related crime by enforcing remedies related to trademark violations including authority to seize and destroy counterfeit “knock off” clothing featuring gang colors.
- An enhanced mandatory term of imprisonment for persons who possess, receive or transfer a “community gun”.
- The law requiring an inquiry concerning the source of bail funds when a defendant is a gang member associate
- The law which requires elementary school education in gang violence prevention and ways to avoid membership in gangs; education for teachers to recognize signs of gang activity.
- The bill that would make transfer of a cell phone to a prisoner by Corrections Department personnel a crime to prevent continued control of gang activity while incarcerated
