Girgenti Eager To Return As Chair Of Senate Law And Public Safety And Veterans' Affairs Committee
February 01, 2008
TRENTON – Senator John A. Girgenti today said that he is eager to return to work as the Chairman of the Senate Law, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs Committee, after his reappointment to the position by Senate President Richard J. Codey.
“Since joining the Senate, I have worked tirelessly to protect the citizens of this State,” said Senator Girgenti, D-Bergen and Passaic. “I’ve used my position as an elected official to sponsor many important pieces of legislation that have become law, including a measure that will prohibit certain convicted sexual predators from accessing the internet,.”
Senator Girgenti stated that in the past he has used his chairmanship position to advance important legislation to crack down on organized retail theft by creating tougher penalties for leaders of theft rings; to draft the law that created the “Sex Crime Victim Treatment Fund,” which imposes additional financial penalties on sex offenders in order to fund counseling and treatment for sex crime victims and their families; and to form a task force to address the growing problem of gang violence throughout New Jersey.
“As the returning Chairman of the Senate Law, Public Safety & Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I will continue to work to improve the safety and quality of life for New Jersey’s residents by sponsoring more anti-gang legislation.”
Senator Girgenti was also reappointed to be the Vice Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and will join the Senate Wagering Tourism and Historic Preservation Committee.
